First Trimester Screening

Today, Reuben and I went to a see a specialist for our first trimester screening. These tests are totally optional and they combine a blood test, an ultrasound and another later blood test (that I will have next week) to test for the most common chromosomal disorders and neural tube defects. So far everything looks great and we are at a very low risk for any of these disorders.

The technologist took her time to show us several parts of the baby during the ultrasound. We saw the heart beating, the baby's arms and legs and the bones of the skull that are hardening and now visible on the ultrasound. Next came the measurements needed for the test. The baby was very active and not wanting to stay still! The technologist was able to complete her part of the test and asked if we wanted some pictures of the baby for ourselves. Of course! So she started and took one picture, but before we could get any more she got called out of the room. It's not the clearest, but here is the one picture we got to take home. The baby's head is on the right this time and facing downwards.

Afterwards, the doctor came in and took some of his own measurements. He pushed a lot harder and with a full bladder this part was a little uncomfortable. He also had difficulty getting the baby to hold still but eventually got the measurements he needed. He told us that everything looked great and that we are going to have our hands full with a very active baby!

Coming up...we're headed to Indiana for Reuben's cousin's wedding and we get to share good news with his family members who haven't heard yet. My next prenatal appointment is Wednesday, May 20th. Stay tuned for more updates!
